Porky’s BBQ – Camden
A while back we spent some time wandering around the Camden Loch and Stables on a Saturday. We got some cute dishes and a few button up shirts for honey. We went and had a pint of delicious Camden Wit at The Loch Tavern and then went and ate at Porky’s. Now… I don’t eat a lot of meat as a rule, a little bit goes a long way with me. So when I saw the “Memphis BBQ” sign and thought about the goodness of a chopped sandwich, we just had to try it.
The inside had a very cute, homey vibe. The beer selection was interesting. We had Sierra Nevada and a Dixie New Orleans, two beers I’ve never had before.
I’ll start out by saying, I knew I wasn’t in Memphis, so I knew not to expect too much of the kind of BBQ I’m use to. We started out with some cheesy corn hushpuppies… that didn’t feel like they were cooked all the way through.
… and then I freaked out when I saw catfish on the menu! I sat there for a moment thinking how my honey has never had catfish and jumped at the chance…
It wasn’t catfish. And there was no tartar sauce.
It was good fish though… just not what I expected. Catfish is gritty and thin, this fish was fluffy, thick and light. Sadness.
The pulled pork was pretty darn good, but I’m use to getting pickles and onions and two slices of white bread with pulled pork and this just had beet colored pickles. (By the way those are the same pie and baking trays we bought a little earlier in the market!) And my goodness there was enough on the plate for about 4 decent sandwiches. And before you ask… no they didn’t have a chopped sandwich or I would have ordered that. I should have asked more questions but I was blinded by hunger.
We ordered mac & cheese and the cole slaw for sides. Both were pretty good although the color of the cole slaw reminded me of crab dip.
Then… as if this wasn’t enough food! I wanted to see if the apple cobbler was any good.
Once again, it was good… but not like home. It would definitely do in a pinch. So we didn’t walk home that night because it was raining and we didn’t bring an umbrella but I wish we had because we were both so full that neither of us ate until dinner the next night.
I’m sorry if this post sounds negative. I’m sure that someone who isn’t from Texas or the south would think this place rocked! It was good… but it won’t be on my Must Return List. Maybe if I do go back I’ll order the pulled pork for take away and put together a couple of chopped sandwiches with homemade potato salad and cole slaw at home.
Oh! And they didn’t have any potato salad on the menu! What?
It was pretty cute though, when it was all said and done my honey said, “It was good. But it wasn’t Gatlin’s”
That’s right sugar.
