My first pub quiz!

My first pub quiz!

When my honey and I were dating we both loved the movie Going The Distance with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. We were about the same distance apart and we related to the time difference. Texting someone when you’ve had too many at the bar at 2 am your time is when the other person is either on their way to work the next day or when you’re heading home from work. Anyone who knows me knows I don’t generally hang out in bars… I’m a bit of a loner. I like quiet places and dinners with friends and walks in the park. I was born 40… basically. So the scene in the movie where Drew and Justin (aka Erin and Garrett) are seated at a bar and the ditzy waitress/bartender has a mic in her hand and everyone in the bar is watching you so they can do the Pub Quiz… this… is what I thought Pub Quizzes were. And I knew immediately that they weren’t for me. Not because I don’t like trivia but because I hate being infront of people… even when I’m drunk.

We went to the pub on the corner to have some dinner and a pint and wouldn’t you know they announced on a mic that there would be a pub quiz at 8. My honey got so excited, he’s an outgoing fella… like he would get up on stage and dance without batting an eyelash without giving to you know whats about who was watching or what they were thinking. *Tag this as another example of how opposites attract. He asked me if I wanted to do it and, naturally, my response was Hell no. Sadness stole his smile and excitement. I felt bad, but there was no way I was going to go up to the bar and do that. Jump to 10 minutes later and the guy with the mic walks around asking loudly who wants to participate in the pub quiz. A table near us said they did.. for 2 pounds per player and he handed them sheets of paper and a pen.

I perked up.

“What’s that he’s handing them?” I ask

“That’s the quiz.” Honey answers longingly.

“Wait… so you can sit at the table and do the quiz?” I query

“Yeah… what did you think you did?” He asked furrowing his brow.

“Remember Going The Distance? ”

“Seriously?” he responded. “That’s Hollywood” he answers poking fun at me.

This is my response to a lot of things he comments on about what he and his fellow British think of Americans. Shows like Jersey Shore, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, 16 and Pregnant and The Housewives of whatever city are the ambassadors of America going out to the rest of the world. ‘That’s not real America!” I say… ok maybe 16 and Pregnant is pretty close… but I gotta say that it looks like the UK and America are pretty closely related on that one.

Baaaaaaccccccckkkkkkkkk to the point of this post. I quickly raise my hand. Hellz yeah I wanna do the Pub Quiz from the comfort of my corner booth, that has been newly reupholstered (the pub just remodeled a bit). So we paid our 4 pounds and proceeded with the 5 + The Killer Round to come in 6 out of 8. It was fun. There was yelling involved from table to table… I’m ok with that interaction. The winners were 2 teams of 20 somethings with about 9 people in each team… and in all honesty only about half even paid to play. That’s not really the point though… IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!! I personally suck at trivia. But my honey has a lot of information in that head of his. I’m glad he’s on my team.
